This event has minimal direct impact on financial markets, as it primarily concerns a legal dispute over a trademark and damages for vandalism. The ruling could affect the ability of the Proud Boys to generate revenue from merchandise, but this is not a significant market factor.

A D.C. Superior Court judge has awarded the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church control over the Proud Boys trademark and the right to seize money from merchandise sales. This ruling follows a $2.8 million default judgment against the Proud Boys for vandalism committed after a December 2020 pro-Donald Trump rally, where Black Lives Matter banners were torn down and burned at the church. Enrique Tarrio, then leader of the Proud Boys, confessed to participating in the burnings and was later sentenced to prison for this and for orchestrating the January 6, 2021, riot. Donald Trump had granted pardons to many involved in the January 6 attack, including Enrique Tarrio. The church filed the lawsuit to recoup damages, and after no payments or responses from the Proud Boys, a motion was filed in December seeking trademark rights. Enrique Tarrio has stated that he was denied due process.
