Mexico Deploys Troops to US Border

Mexico has deployed 10,000 National Guard and Army troops to its northern border, primarily in Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana, in response to tariff threats from the United States. This action, initiated by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum following negotiations with then-President Donald Trump, aims to reinforce border security and combat fentanyl smuggling. In return, the United States delayed imposing tariffs and pledged to increase efforts to stop American guns from being trafficked into Mexico. The deployment is seen as a strategic move by Claudia Sheinbaum to navigate relations with the United States and address border issues, despite a reported decline in migration and fentanyl overdoses over the past year. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged and thanked Mexico for these efforts.
