Manipur Governor Extends Arms Surrender

India — Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended the deadline for the voluntary surrender of looted and illegal arms until March 6, 2025, following requests from both valley and hill areas. This initiative is part of an effort to restore peace and stability after two years of ethnic violence between the Meitei people and Kuki people, which has resulted in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced. During the initial seven-day period, more than 300 weapons were surrendered, primarily from the valley districts. The Governor assured no punitive action for those who comply, but warned of strict legal action for non-compliance after the deadline. The Centre imposed President's Rule in India — Manipur on February 13, 2025, after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's resignation, placing the state assembly under suspended animation. Groups like Arambai Tenggol have surrendered weapons, and security forces including the Assam Rifles, India — Indian Army, and Manipur — Manipur Police have recovered additional illegal arms.
