Pakistan Honey Production Drops 15%

Beekeepers in Pakistan are facing severe challenges due to climate change and pollution, leading to a 15% drop in honey production since 2022. Unpredictable weather patterns, hazardous smog, and diminished rainfall have forced beekeepers like Malik Hussain Khan and Yousaf Khan to travel further and more frequently to find suitable conditions for their bees. This has resulted in significant bee deaths and increased operational costs. The Honey Bee Research Institute reports that the number of honey varieties has plummeted, and three of Pakistan's four honey bee species are endangered. While Abdullah Chaudry has developed new, more spacious hives to help bees cope with extreme heat, these technological adaptations are only part of the solution to an ongoing battle against environmental degradation and its impact on the honey trade and global food security.
