Man Smuggles Turtle at Newark Airport

A Pennsylvania man was caught attempting to smuggle a live red-ear slider turtle, approximately 5 inches long and wrapped in a blue towel, through security at Kuwait — Kuwait International Airport on March 7. The United States — Social Security Administration officers detected the turtle after a body scanner alarm was triggered in the man's groin area. The man was questioned by United States — Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who then confiscated the turtle and planned to contact the United States — United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The man missed his flight and was escorted from the checkpoint. Thomas Carter, Federal Security Director for New Jersey's United States — Social Security Administration, noted this was the first time they encountered someone concealing a live animal in their pants.
