US Detains Tufts Student Rumeysa Ozturk

Detention of Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish doctoral student at Tufts University, was detained by U.S. immigration authorities and had her F-1 visa revoked. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security alleged she engaged in activities supporting Hamas, a claim her lawyer, Mahsa Khanbabai, disputes. Ozturk's detention, which occurred near her home in Somerville, Massachusetts, was condemned by Democratic lawmakers, including U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, as an assault on free speech. Following her arrest, Khanbabai filed a lawsuit, leading U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani to order U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) not to move Ozturk out of Massachusetts without 48 hours' notice. However, Ozturk was subsequently transferred to a detention center in Louisiana. This incident is part of a broader crackdown by the Donald Trump administration on foreign-born students and permanent residents involved in pro-Palestinian protests, with other cases involving students from Columbia University, Brown University, Cornell University, Georgetown University, and the University of Alabama. The administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has pledged to deport such protesters, accusing them of supporting Hamas and undermining U.S. foreign policy, while critics argue this conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism.
