Japan Megaquake $1.81T Damage Warning

A new report from the United Kingdom — Met Office warns that a long-anticipated megaquake off Japan's Pacific coast, specifically along the Nankai Trough, could cause up to $1.81 trillion in economic damage and result in nearly 300,000 deaths. This updated estimate, which accounts for inflationary pressures and expanded flood areas, represents a sharp increase from previous projections. The Nankai Trough is a highly active seismic zone where the Philippines is subducting under the Eurasian plate, with an 80% chance of a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake within the next 30 years. The report highlights the potential for devastating tsunamis and widespread building collapses, particularly if the quake occurs at night during winter. Japan has previously experienced a magnitude 9 quake in 2011, which led to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant meltdowns and over 15,000 deaths, underscoring the severe risks.
