Meta Platforms Accused of Aiding China

Former Meta Platforms executive Sarah Wynn-Williams testified before the United States — United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, accusing Meta Platforms of undermining U.S. national security and aiding China's artificial intelligence development. She alleged that Meta Platforms executives lied about their dealings with the China — Chinese Communist Party to employees, shareholders, Congress, and the American public, all to build an $18 billion business in China. Wynn-Williams claimed Meta Platforms provided custom censorship tools for China, deleted the Facebook account of a Chinese dissident Guo Wengui under pressure, and ignored warnings about a 'physical pipeline' that could give China backdoor access to U.S. user data. She also linked Meta Platforms' Llama AI model to China's military AI development. Meta Platforms, through Mark Zuckerberg and spokespersons, has vehemently denied these claims, calling them 'divorced from reality' and 'riddled with false claims.' The testimony comes amidst Meta Platforms' efforts to improve its standing with the Donald Trump administration and just days before a major antitrust trial by the United States — Federal Trade Commission that could force the company to divest Instagram and WhatsApp. Wynn-Williams' memoir, 'Careless People,' detailing these allegations, has become a bestseller despite Meta Platforms' legal attempts to silence her.
