Deadly Flash Flood Hits Ruidoso, New Mexico

A severe flash flood, triggered by monsoon rains, struck the mountain village of Mexico, on July 8, 2025. The event resulted in the tragic deaths of three people, including two children, and caused extensive damage, with at least one house being swept away. Emergency crews, including the United States — New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and National Guard teams, conducted over 85 swift water rescues. The Rio Ruidoso river crested at a record high of over 20 feet. The area's vulnerability to flooding was exacerbated by recent wildfires that stripped vegetation, reducing the ground's ability to absorb rainfall. Ruidoso Mayor Lynn D. Crawford expressed sorrow for the victims and acknowledged the unexpected severity of the flood. The United States — National Weather Service had issued flood warnings, and meteorologists attributed the rapid runoff to the burn scars from previous fires. The event also brought back painful memories for residents like Kaitlyn Carpenter, whose art studio was destroyed in a previous flood.
