Ryanair's consideration of increased staff bonuses for identifying oversized luggage aims to control costs and boost profitability, which is positive for its stock. The reported doubling of post-tax profits further reinforces a positive market sentiment for Ryanair. Potential US tariffs on European goods, including commercial aircraft, could negatively impact Boeing and Airbus, but Ryanair expects Boeing to absorb any such costs.
Ryanair is considering increasing the bonus paid to staff for identifying passengers with oversized luggage, from €1.50 per bag to a higher amount, capped at around €80 per staff member per month. CEO Michael O Leary stated this initiative aims to 'eliminate the scourge' of excess baggage, control costs, and boost profitability. The airline reported a significant increase in post-tax profit, more than doubling to €820m in the three months ending June, partly due to a strong Easter holiday season and a 21% rise in average fares. Ryanair also announced it would increase its personal bag allowance to 40x30x20cm in response to new EU minimum standards. Separately, Michael O Leary commented on potential US tariffs threatened by Donald Trump against Europe, predicting that commercial aircraft would likely be exempt, and that Boeing would bear any tariff costs if they were imposed. The European Union — European Parliament is also pushing for airlines to allow free personal and small hand luggage, a proposal Michael O Leary believes will not come into law.
