Gita Gopinath, the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, is stepping down from her role in August 2025 to return to academia. She will rejoin Harvard University as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics. Gita Gopinath joined the International Monetary Fund in January 2019 as chief economist and was promoted to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022. International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Gita Gopinath's contributions during her tenure, which included navigating global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. A successor to Gita Gopinath at the International Monetary Fund is expected to be named in due course.
