Manipur President's Rule Extended

President's Rule in India — Manipur has been extended for another six months, effective from August 13, 2025, following a resolution moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and approved by the India — Rajya Sabha. This extension comes after the initial imposition of President's Rule on February 13, 2025, subsequent to the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The decision is driven by the persistent ethnic violence between the Meitei people and Kuki people, which began in May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced. The state assembly remains under suspended animation. Authorities in India — Manipur have also issued an advisory to enhance vigilance along borders to prevent illegal immigration, especially given the turmoil in neighboring countries. The ongoing instability has also led to the looting of over 6,000 police weapons and blockades of critical National Highways 2 and 37, impacting connectivity and supply lines to the Imphal valley.
