Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Yemen

A boat carrying 154 Ethiopian migrants capsized off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden, resulting in at least 68 deaths and 74 missing individuals. Only 12 migrants survived the shipwreck. The International Organization for Migration reported on the tragedy, highlighting that Yemen remains a major, perilous route for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa seeking work in Gulf Arab countries, despite its decade-long civil war. The Abyan security directorate launched a large-scale search-and-rescue operation. This incident is part of a series of shipwrecks in the region, with previous events in March off Yemen and Djibouti also resulting in numerous deaths and disappearances. The International Organization for Migration noted a decrease in migrant arrivals to Yemen in 2024 compared to 2023, possibly due to increased patrolling.
