Former Heat Security Guard Charged

Marcos Thomas Perez, a former security worker for the Miami Heat and National Basketball Association, and a retired United States — Miami Police Department officer, has been charged with transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce. Perez is accused of stealing over 400 game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia, valued at millions of dollars, from the Miami Heat's secured equipment room at Kaseya Center between 2016 and 2025. These items were intended for a future Miami Heat museum. Over a three-year period, Perez allegedly sold more than 100 of these stolen items to online brokers for approximately $2 million, often at prices well below market value. Notably, a game-worn LeBron James Miami Heat NBA Finals jersey, which Perez sold for about $100,000, later fetched $3.7 million at a Sotheby s auction. The United States — Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation, leading to a search warrant at Perez's home in April, where nearly 300 additional stolen items were recovered. The Miami Heat confirmed these items were stolen from their facility. Perez made his initial appearance in federal court, with the United States — United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida prosecuting the case.
