Italy Approves Messina Strait Bridge

Italy has given final approval for the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge, a 13.5 billion euro ($15.5 billion) project that will connect the Italian mainland with Italy — Sicily. This ambitious infrastructure, championed by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini and revived by Premier Giorgia Meloni's administration, is set to become the world's longest suspension bridge, measuring nearly 3.7 kilometers with a 3.3-kilometer suspended span. The project is expected to create 120,000 jobs annually and accelerate economic growth in southern Italy, a region that has historically lagged. Preliminary work could begin by late September or early October, with construction starting next year and completion anticipated between 2032-2033. The contract has been awarded to a consortium led by Webuild, an Italian infrastructure group that previously won the bid in 2006 before the project was canceled. The bridge's design, similar to the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge built by Webuild, is engineered to withstand seismic forces, addressing concerns about the Messina fault. The project has faced opposition from environmental groups, who have lodged complaints with the European Union over potential impacts on migratory birds, and concerns about mafia interference, which Italy's President Sergio Mattarella has addressed by insisting on strict anti-mafia legislation. Additionally, Italy is considering classifying the bridge as dual-use infrastructure, which could help it meet NATO defense spending targets, though this has also drawn criticism from academics.
