Walmart Recalls Radioactive Shrimp

The United States — Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers to avoid certain raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart due to potential contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. The United States — United States Customs and Border Protection initially detected Cesium-137 in shipments from the Indonesia-based company BMS Foods. Although the detected amount would not pose an acute hazard, long-term consumption could elevate cancer risk. Walmart has since recalled its Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp products in 13 states. The United States — Food and Drug Administration has also added BMS Foods to an import alert, preventing its products from entering the United States until the contamination issue is resolved. The United States — Food and Drug Administration is coordinating with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to investigate the root cause of the contamination.
