Catholic and Orthodox Easter Alignment

For over 400 years, the Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church have celebrated Easter on different dates due to differing calendars and ecclesiastical calculations. This year, the dates coincide, prompting Pope Francis and Bartholomew I of Constantinople to renew calls for a permanently unified Easter date. The World Council of Churches has proposed a compromise using modern astronomy. However, historical mistrust, particularly from the Russian Orthodox Church towards the Catholic Church's supremacy, and current geopolitical issues like the war in Ukraine affecting discussions with Russia, complicate prospects for consensus. Despite these challenges, some regions like Finland and Greece have already achieved practical alignment of Easter celebrations.
