Mahindra & Mahindra announced its acquisition of a 58.96% majority stake in commercial vehicle manufacturer SML Mahindra for Rs 555 crore. This strategic move involves purchasing 43.96% from Oracle Corporation and 15% from Isuzu, both at Rs 650 per share. The acquisition aims to significantly boost Mahindra & Mahindra's market share in the >3.5T commercial vehicle segment from 3% to an anticipated 6% initially, with long-term targets of 10-12% by FY31 and over 20% by FY36. The deal is seen by Anish Shah, Group CEO and MD of the Mahindra Group, as a crucial step towards achieving 5x growth in emerging businesses. Shailesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector at Mahindra & Mahindra, highlighted that the acquisition will enhance market coverage, improve operating efficiency through platform consolidation, unify supplier and dealer networks, and optimize manufacturing capacity. Mahindra & Mahindra will also launch a mandatory open offer for an additional 26% stake in SML Mahindra in compliance with India — Securities and Exchange Board of India regulations. The transaction is expected to be completed within 2025.
