North Korea deploys troops to Russia

North Korea has confirmed the deployment of 15,000 troops to Russia to fight alongside Russian forces against Ukraine, particularly in the Russia — Kursk Oblast. This deployment has resulted in approximately 4,700 North Korean casualties, including 600 deaths. In return for its military support, which includes billions of dollars worth of conventional weapons, North Korea has received military and economic assistance from Russia, such as air defense missiles, electronic warfare equipment, drones, and spy satellite technology. This cooperation is formalized under a landmark 2024 defense treaty between North Korea and Russia. South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) has been monitoring these developments, reporting on the casualties and the exchange of military aid. The United States and South Korea have expressed concerns about this alliance, suspecting that Russia is providing military and economic assistance to North Korea in return for its support.
