Bangladesh-India Diplomatic Spat Escalates

A significant diplomatic incident has unfolded between India and Bangladesh following controversial statements from Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and his close aide, A. L. M. Fazlur Rahman. Rahman, a former army officer, suggested on social media that Bangladesh should collaborate with China to occupy India's northeastern states if India attacks Pakistan in response to a terror attack. This follows earlier remarks by Muhammad Yunus during a visit to China, where he claimed Bangladesh was the 'only guardian' of the Indian Ocean and invited Beijing to use Bangladesh as an economic extension for trade with India's landlocked northeastern states. These comments were met with strong disapproval in India, leading to India withdrawing transhipment facilities for Bangladesh's exports to most countries, except Nepal and Bhutan, in April. Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since distanced the government from Rahman's remarks, emphasizing its commitment to sovereignty and peaceful coexistence. The incident has caused a significant downturn in India-Bangladesh relations.
