Mexico Sues Google Over Gulf Renaming

Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Alphabet Inc. for renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its Alphabet Inc. Maps service for users in the United States. This action follows an executive order by former US President Donald Trump to rename the body of water to 'honor American greatness.' Alphabet Inc. stated it adopted the name change in line with its policy of following official government sources for geographic designations. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the lawsuit, arguing that the US government's order only applies to the US portion of the oceanic basin and does not grant authority to rename the entire body of water. The dispute also involves the US United States — United States House of Representatives passing a bill to codify the name change, though its passage in the United States — United States Senate is uncertain. The Associated Press was also penalized by the Trump administration for not adopting the new name in its coverage.
