A passenger bus in Sri Lanka skidded off a cliff in the tea-growing hill country near Kotmale, resulting in the deaths of 21 people and injuries to 35 others. The bus, operated by a state-run company, was carrying nearly 50 to 75 passengers. Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena and police spokesman Buddhika Manathunga confirmed the casualties and stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause, which could be driver recklessness or a technical fault. Deadly bus accidents are common in Sri Lanka due to reckless driving and poorly maintained roads.
