Lewis Pugh Swims Martha's Vineyard for Sharks

Lewis Pugh, a British-South African endurance swimmer and United Nations Patron of the Oceans, is undertaking a 62-mile swim around United States — Martha s Vineyard, Massachusetts, over an estimated 12 days. The swim, starting May 15, 2025, is timed with the 50th anniversary of the film 'Jaws', which was filmed on the island. Pugh's goal is to change public perception of sharks, which he believes were unfairly maligned by the movie, and to advocate for their protection. He highlights that around 100 million sharks are killed globally each year, primarily due to commercial fishing. The event also draws attention to the efforts of individuals like Steven Spielberg and Peter Benchley, who have expressed regret over 'Jaws'' impact and now contribute to conservation. Marine biologists like Greg Skomal support the need for education, noting that while 'Jaws' instilled fear, it also inspired marine biology studies. The swim is expected to be physically and mentally challenging, with Pugh wearing only trunks, a cap, and goggles in 47-degree water, accompanied by safety personnel and a 'Shark Shield' device.
