George Wendt, 'Cheers' Actor, Dies

George Wendt, the American actor best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the hit 1980s TV comedy 'Cheers', has died peacefully in his sleep at his home at the age of 76. His family announced his passing through The Agency Group, requesting privacy. Wendt earned six consecutive Emmy Award nominations for his portrayal of the affable, beer-loving barfly. Before 'Cheers', he spent six years with Chicago's The Second City improv troupe. After 'Cheers', Wendt continued his career with roles on stage, including Broadway productions of 'Art', 'Hairspray', and 'Elf', and guest spots on various TV shows. He also co-wrote a book about beer. In 2000, a lawsuit he and John Ratzenberger filed against Paramount Global — Paramount Pictures over the use of their likenesses was denied a hearing by the United States — Supreme Court of the United States, eventually settling for undisclosed terms. Wendt is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett, who voiced Norm's wife Vera on 'Cheers', and their three children. His nephew is actor Jason Sudeikis.
