The appointment of Tamannaah Bhatia as brand ambassador for Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited aims to boost its national market presence, potentially increasing revenue and market share for the company. However, the controversy surrounding the choice of a non-Kannadiga celebrity could lead to negative public sentiment, which might affect brand perception and sales within India — Karnataka.
The government of India — Karnataka and its state-owned company, Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), have appointed Bollywood actress Tamannaah Bhatia as the brand ambassador for Mysore Sandal Soap and other KSDL products. The two-year contract is valued at Rs 6.2 crore. This decision has sparked significant controversy among Kannada activists and netizens, who question why a local Kannada actress was not chosen for the role. India — Karnataka's Commerce and Industries Minister, M. B. Patil, defended the move, stating it was a strategic decision by the KSDL board, made after consulting marketing experts, to aggressively penetrate markets beyond India — Karnataka and achieve an annual revenue target of Rs 5,000 crore by 2028. KSDL officials revealed that Tamannaah Bhatia was selected over other leading celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Rashmika Mandanna, Pooja Hegde, and Kiara Advani due to her pan-India appeal, reasonable engagement terms, and strong digital presence. KSDL, which had previously terminated a contract with MS Dhoni, aims to leverage Bhatia's influence to expand its national market presence, which currently stands at 6-7%.
