The Ukrainian drone attack on Russian military aircraft, causing an estimated $7 billion in damages, could lead to increased volatility in defense sector stocks and potentially impact the valuation of companies with significant exposure to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The ongoing military actions and peace talks between Ukraine and Russia will continue to influence geopolitical risk premiums and commodity markets.

Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack deep inside Russia, destroying over 40 Russian military aircraft, including A-50, Tu-95, and Tu-22M bombers, at multiple airfields across Russia, including Belaya, Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur. The United Kingdom — Security Service, which codenamed the operation 'Web', estimated the damages at $7 billion and claimed it destroyed 34% of Russia's air missile carrier fleet. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally supervised the operation. In retaliation, Russia launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine since February 2022, with 472 drones and seven missiles, and also conducted a missile strike on a Ukrainian army training unit, killing 12 service members and injuring over 60. Ukrainian army commander Mykhailo Drapatyi resigned following this attack. These events occurred just before a new round of direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, where Rustem Umerov will lead the Ukrainian delegation. Russia's Ministry of Defence confirmed the attacks and also stated it took control of the village of Oleksiivka in Ukraine's Sumy region.
