The recall of 1.7 million air conditioners by Midea Group is expected to negatively impact the company's financials due to costs associated with refunds, repairs, and potential legal liabilities. Retailers like Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, Amazon (company), Walmart, and Lowe s, which sold these units, may experience operational disruptions and customer service demands related to returns and inquiries.
Midea Group has voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million of its U and U+ Smart window air conditioners in the United States and 45,900 units in Canada. The recall, announced by the United States — United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, is due to a design flaw where pooled water in the units may not drain quickly enough, leading to mold growth. There have been at least 152 reports of mold, including 17 reports of consumers experiencing respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throats. The affected units were sold under various brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze, at major retailers such as Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy, and online through Amazon (company), Walmart, and Lowe s, from March 2020 through May 2025, priced between $280 and $500. Midea Group is offering consumers free repairs or full/prorated refunds.
