Tuvaluans Seek Australian Climate Visas

Nearly a third of Tuvalu's citizens are seeking visas to live in Australia under the Falepili Union, a landmark climate migration deal signed in 2024. This agreement allows 280 Tuvalu citizens to migrate to Australia annually, providing a pathway for those threatened by rising sea levels, which scientists fear will make Tuvalu uninhabitable within 80 years. The program has seen significant interest, with over 3,000 applications in the first four days. While hailed as a response to climate-forced migration, concerns exist about Tuvalu being drained of skilled professionals. The pact also commits Australia to defending Tuvalu and grants Australia a say in Tuvalu's defense agreements, part of Canberra's strategy to counter China's influence in the Pacific.
