Israel Strikes Iran's Evin Prison

An Israeli airstrike on June 23 targeted Evin Prison in Tehran, Iran, resulting in the deaths of 71 people, including administrative staff, guards, prisoners, and visiting relatives. The strike, part of a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, destroyed parts of the prison's administrative building, medical center, and visiting rooms. Iranian judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir confirmed the death toll and details of the attack. The prison, known for detaining political prisoners like Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi and foreign nationals such as Imprisonment of Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris and Imprisonment of Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, saw inmates transferred to other facilities post-attack. Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant acknowledged Evin Prison was among the targets in the broader campaign against Iran's military and nuclear infrastructure. The attack occurred shortly before a ceasefire, announced by US President Donald Trump, ended the intense hostilities, which also saw the death of top prosecutor Ali Ghanaatkar.
