UC Sues Trump Over Funding Freeze

A coalition of faculty, staff, student organizations, and labor unions, led by American Association of University Professors and represented by Democracy Forward, has filed a lawsuit against the Donald Trump administration. The lawsuit alleges that the administration is misusing civil rights laws to curtail academic freedom and free speech at the University of California and other institutions. This comes after the Donald Trump administration fined University of California, Los Angeles $1.2 billion and froze its research funding, accusing the school of allowing antisemitism and civil rights violations. Similar actions have been taken against other elite private colleges like Harvard University, Brown University, and Columbia University, with Columbia University agreeing to a $200 million settlement. The University of California system, which receives over $17 billion annually in federal support, faces investigations across all its 10 campuses, posing a grave threat to its operations and critical research funding.
