British Couple Released by Taliban

Peter H. Reynolds, 80, and his wife Detention of Barbie and Peter Reynolds, 76, a British couple who had lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades running educational programs, were detained by the Taliban in February 2025. They were held for almost eight months on undisclosed charges, with the Taliban later stating they had 'violated Afghan laws'. Their family and United Nations human rights experts raised concerns about their rapidly deteriorating health and harsh prison conditions. Following extensive mediation efforts led by Qatar, in coordination with the United Kingdom, the couple was released on September 19, 2025. They were flown to Qatar for medical checks before returning to the United Kingdom. The Taliban's decision to release them is seen as part of a broader strategy to gain international recognition for their government.
