The price reductions by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul) and Mother Dairy, driven by GST rate cuts in India, are expected to boost consumption of dairy products, leading to increased turnover for these companies. This makes essential food items more affordable for consumers, potentially stimulating demand in the broader food and beverage market.
Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets products under the Amul brand, announced a significant price reduction across more than 700 product packs, including butter, ghee, UHT milk, ice cream, cheese, and paneer. This decision, effective September 22, 2025, is a direct result of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate cut by the government of India, with the cooperative aiming to pass the full benefits to consumers. For example, Amul butter (100 gm) is now ₹58 from ₹62, and ghee rates are cut by ₹40 to ₹610 per litre. Mother Dairy also implemented similar price cuts on its products. Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation believes these reductions will spur consumption, especially given the low per capita consumption of dairy products in India, thereby boosting demand and contributing to its turnover growth. The move is also seen as making nutrition more accessible and affordable for the nation.
