New Stratus Covid Variant Spreads

A new Covid variant, 'Stratus' (including XFG and XFG.3), first identified in January, is rapidly spreading globally. The World Health Organization declared XFG 'under monitoring' by June. The United Kingdom — UK Health Security Agency reported a 7.1% increase in cases in England by September 3, and Republic of Ireland logged 425 new infections in the first week of September, largely attributed to XFG. The Stratus variant presents a unique initial symptom of a hoarse or raspy voice, preceding more traditional Covid symptoms like fever and cough. Experts, including Dr. Gareth Nye and Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, note its increased transmissibility and ability to bypass existing immunity, making prior vaccines less effective and emphasizing the need for regular vaccination updates. Additional symptoms include blocked noses, sore throats, digestive problems, and fatigue. The variant is expected to spread widely, particularly with children returning to school.
