France Leads Palestine State Recognition

Dozens of world leaders gathered at the United Nations on Monday, September 22, 2025, to recognize a Palestinian state, a landmark diplomatic shift nearly two years into the Gaza war. French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would recognize Palestine statehood, a move followed by Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Portugal, Lisa Monaco, Belgium, Andorra, Malta, and Luxembourg. Spain, Republic of Ireland, and Norway had already recognized Palestine in May, and Sweden in 2014. This collective action aims to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security. Israel and its close ally the United States boycotted the meeting, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring there will be no Palestinian state and threatening annexation of the West Bank. The United States views the recognition as a reward to Hamas and has warned of consequences for countries taking measures against Israel. The Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas, hailed the move and called for full UN membership, promising reforms and elections. However, full UN membership requires Security Council approval, where the United States holds veto power. The event highlights growing international condemnation of Israel's military conduct in Gaza, where over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
