The visit of Keir Starmer to India is expected to significantly boost trade and investment between the United Kingdom and India, particularly through the ratification of the India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This will positively impact sectors like financial services, defense, and technology, potentially increasing two-way commerce by $35 billion in the long run and enhancing market access for goods and services.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is undertaking his first official visit to India from October 8–9, 2025, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit aims to strengthen the India–UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, aligning with the ‘Vision 2035’ roadmap which focuses on cooperation in trade, investment, defense, innovation, climate, education, and people-to-people ties. Both leaders will attend the 6th Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, deliver keynote addresses, and engage with business leaders to discuss the India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This agreement, signed during Narendra Modi's previous visit to the United Kingdom in July, is expected to boost bilateral commerce by $35 billion. Discussions will also cover regional and global issues, including India's campaign against terrorism, activities of pro-Khalistan elements in the United Kingdom, and the extradition of economic offenders like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Sanjay Bhandari. The visit also seeks to review the implementation of the Vision 2035 strategy and the Defence Industrial Roadmap for closer cooperation on military hardware.
