Couple Accused of Starving Daughter

Manpreet Jatana and Jaskiret Singh Uppal, an Indian-origin couple, have been accused of murdering their three-year-old daughter, Penelope Chandris, by deliberately starving her over an extended period. Penelope Chandris's emaciated body was found in December 2023, with post-mortem tests confirming malnutrition and fatal ketoacidosis as the cause of death. The couple appeared at the United Kingdom — Old Bailey criminal court, where they were charged with murder, manslaughter, causing or allowing the death of a child, and abandoning a child. Judge Lynn Tayton has remanded Manpreet Jatana and Jaskiret Singh Uppal to custody until their next hearing on December 16, when they will enter their pleas.
