Trump's University Funding Compact

The United States — White House, under Donald Trump, has proposed a 'Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education' to nine major universities, including Vanderbilt University, the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, the University of Southern California, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Arizona, Brown University, and the University of Virginia. This compact asks these institutions to commit to the administration's political priorities on issues such as admissions, women's sports, free speech, student discipline, and college affordability. In exchange, universities would receive priority access to federal grants and United States — White House events. Key demands include accepting the government's definition of gender, stopping the consideration of race and gender in admissions, requiring SAT/ACT scores, capping international enrollment, freezing tuition for U.S. students, and promoting conservative viewpoints on campus. The United States — United States Department of Justice would enforce the terms, with penalties for violations. While Kevin Eltife of the University of Texas at Austin expressed willingness to cooperate, figures like Irwin Mitchell of the American Council on Education and Larry Summers have criticized the compact, viewing it as an infringement on academic independence and a counterproductive measure.
