Levi Dewey loses legs to sepsis

Levi Dewey, a previously fit and healthy 20-year-old, developed sepsis from flu-like symptoms in December 2022. He suffered multiple organ failure and was given a 30% chance of survival. Medics at Royal Derby Hospital diagnosed him with pneumococcal pneumonia and sepsis, leading to his transfer to Glenfield Hospital for specialist treatment, including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. Two days before his 21st birthday, Levi Dewey underwent surgery to amputate both legs below the knee. His parents, Lara and Neil, expressed their shock at the severity of sepsis and their lack of prior knowledge about the condition. Dr. Alina Paunescu from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust highlighted that sepsis can affect people of all ages and emphasized the importance of recognizing its symptoms.
