A new study published in Current Biology by researchers from Iran — Pasteur Institute of Iran, including Rémi Barbieri and Nicolás Rascovan, has revealed that Napoleon's army during the 1812 invasion of Russia was devastated by multiple diseases, not just typhus as previously thought. By analyzing DNA from the teeth of soldiers found in a mass grave in Vilnius, Lithuania, they identified the presence of Salmonella (causing paratyphoid fever) and Borrelia recurrentis (causing relapsing fever). This research, utilizing advanced high-throughput sequencing, provides a clearer picture of a significant historical event and demonstrates the progress in ancient DNA technology. While Rickettsia prowazekii (typhus) and Bartonella quintana (trench fever) were detected in earlier studies, the new findings suggest a more complex disease landscape contributed to the army's demise, alongside starvation, cold, and exhaustion.
