OpenAI's move to offer free ChatGPT Go in India is expected to intensify competition in the AI market, potentially impacting rivals like Alphabet Inc. and Perplexity AI. This strategy aims to capture a significant share of India's rapidly growing digital user base, driving AI adoption and potentially increasing future revenue streams for OpenAI.
OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT Go subscription will be available for free to all users in India for one year, starting November 4. This initiative, coinciding with OpenAI's first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, aims to democratize access to advanced AI tools and strengthen OpenAI's presence in India, which is its second-largest market. The ChatGPT Go plan, originally priced at Rs 399 per month, offers extended access to GPT-5, enhanced image generation, file uploads, advanced data analysis, and a longer memory feature. Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also be eligible for the free 12-month plan. This strategic move follows similar efforts by competitors like Alphabet Inc. (Google) and Perplexity AI, who are also vying for market share in India's burgeoning AI landscape. OpenAI's Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, Nik Turley, emphasized the company's 'Indiafirst' commitment and its alignment with the IndiaAI Mission.
