Mississippi Monkey Escape and Shooting

A truck transporting 21 Rhesus macaque monkeys from Tulane University's National Biomedical Research Center overturned on Interstate 59 in United States — Mississippi. Most monkeys died in the crash, but several escaped. One of the escaped monkeys was shot and killed by Jessica Bond Ferguson, a homeowner, who feared for her children's safety. The United States — Jasper County, Mississippi Sheriff's Office and the United States — Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks were involved in the recovery efforts. The United States — Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. Tulane University clarified that it did not own or transport the monkeys, but the incident has raised concerns about the handling and transportation of research animals.
