Yann LeCun Departs Meta Platforms AI

Yann LeCun, Meta Platforms' chief AI scientist and a pioneer in deep learning, is reportedly planning to leave the company to launch his own startup. This move coincides with a significant overhaul of Meta Platforms' AI strategy led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is shifting focus from long-term research to the rapid deployment of AI models and products. Zuckerberg hired Alexandr Wang to lead a new 'superintelligence' team and acquired a 49% interest in Scale AI. LeCun, a known skeptic of large language models, will now report to Wang, a change from his previous reporting to Chris Cox. The company has also experienced other leadership changes, including the departure of Joëlle Pineau, and laid off approximately 600 people from its AI research unit. LeCun's new venture will focus on 'world models' AI systems, a concept he believes will take a decade to fully develop.
