Indian-born Cheetah Mukhi Gives Birth

Mukhi, the first Indian-born female cheetah, has given birth to five cubs at India — Kuno National Park in India — Madhya Pradesh, marking a historic milestone for Project Cheetah. This event signifies the successful adaptation and reproduction of cheetahs in Indian habitats, strengthening optimism for establishing a self-sustaining and genetically diverse cheetah population in India. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Environment Minister Devender Yadav announced the development, highlighting its importance for India's conservation goals. Cheetahs were reintroduced in India on September 17, 2022, with eight cheetahs brought from Namibia to India — Kuno National Park. The successful breeding of Mukhi, born to a Namibian female, is seen as a critical step in the long-term success of the reintroduction initiative, which aims to restore the species after decades of extinction in India. Plans are underway to import additional cheetahs from African nations like Botswana to further enhance genetic diversity.
