Bangladesh's interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has sent an official letter to India requesting the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This request follows a death sentence handed down to Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan by the Bangladesh — International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh) on November 17, for crimes against humanity committed during the 'July Uprising' in August last year. Both Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are believed to be in India. India's External Affairs Ministry has acknowledged the verdict but has not commented on the extradition prospects, maintaining a stance of constructive engagement for peace and stability in Bangladesh. This is the third such extradition request from Bangladesh, with previous requests in December last year also receiving only acknowledgment from India. The situation has strained relations between Bangladesh and India, although recent meetings between national security advisers have eased tensions slightly. Bangladesh is preparing for general elections in February, with Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh — Awami League party barred from political activity.
