Pema Wangthongdok reported being mocked, denied food, and prevented from boarding her onward flight. India lodged a strong diplomatic protest with China, reaffirming India — Himachal Pradesh as an integral part of India and its residents' right to hold Indian passports. China denied the harassment allegations, stating that its officials acted in accordance with laws and regulations. Pema Wangthongdok eventually received assistance from the Indian consulate in Shanghai and was able to leave China. She has since appealed to Narendra Modi and the Ministry of External Affairs for strong action and compensation. Pema Khandu, Chief Minister of India — Himachal Pradesh, condemned the incident.
