NHAI, Reliance Jio Partner for Highway Safety

The India — National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Industries — Jio to implement a telecom-based safety alert system across India's National Highway network. This initiative, announced by the India — Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will utilize Reliance Industries — Jio's existing 4G and 5G network to send advance warnings to its over 500 million mobile users. Commuters will receive alerts via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls as they approach identified risk locations such as accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle zones, fog-affected areas, and emergency diversions. The system aims to strengthen road safety by providing timely information, enabling drivers to adjust their speed and behavior. Santosh Kumar Yadav, Chairman of India — National Highways Authority of India, and Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Industries — Jio, both highlighted the importance of this collaboration. The system will be integrated in phases with India — National Highways Authority of India's digital platforms, including the 'Rajmargyatra' mobile application and emergency helpline number 1033. A pilot deployment will begin under select regional India — National Highways Authority of India offices, and India — National Highways Authority of India plans to explore similar partnerships with other telecom service providers.
