The joint military exercise and India's financial assistance to the Maldives are expected to foster regional stability and strengthen bilateral ties, which could positively impact investment confidence in the Indian Ocean Region. The debt relief provided by India to the Maldives may improve the Maldives' creditworthiness and economic outlook.
The 14th edition of the Joint Military Exercise EKUVERIN between the India — Indian Army and the Maldives — Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) commenced in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, from December 2-15. The exercise, involving 45 personnel from each nation, aims to enhance interoperability and operational synergy in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations across various terrains. This exercise underscores the deep-rooted bonds of friendship and military cooperation between India and the Maldives, reflecting India's 'Neighbourhood First Policy' and its commitment to regional peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region. The event follows a period of strained ties, which saw a significant turnaround after Narendra Modi's visit to the Maldives in July. During this visit, India announced a Line of Credit worth INR 4,850 crore for infrastructure development in the Maldives and an amendatory agreement to reduce the Maldives' annual debt repayment obligations by 40 percent, from USD 51 million to USD 29 million.
