The record-breaking sale of the Peter Carl Fabergé Winter Egg by Chris Christie for £22.9 million demonstrates strong demand and high valuations for rare luxury art pieces, particularly those with historical significance. This event could boost confidence in the high-end art market and potentially increase the perceived value of other unique historical artifacts.
The Peter Carl Fabergé Winter Egg, a jewel-studded creation commissioned in 1913 by Nicholas II for his mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, sold for a record £22.9 million ($30.2 million) at Chris Christie auction house in London. This sale dramatically surpassed the previous world auction record for a Peter Carl Fabergé item, which was held by the Rothschild Egg. Designed by Alma Pihl, the Winter Egg is crafted from rock crystal with platinum and 4,500 diamonds, featuring a snowflake motif and a surprise platinum flower basket inside. After the Russian Revolution, the Soviet Union sold the egg in the 1920s to Wartski, a London dealer, for £450. It was believed lost from 1975 to 1994 before being rediscovered and sold twice previously by Chris Christie in 1994 and 2002, each time setting a new record.
