Steve Cropper, Soul Guitarist, Dies

Steve Cropper, the influential guitarist, songwriter, and record producer, died at the age of 84 in Nashville. Cropper was a pivotal member of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the celebrated Memphis backing band for Stax Records. He co-wrote numerous classic songs, including 'Green Onions,' '(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay' with Otis Redding, and 'In the Midnight Hour.' His distinctive guitar style, characterized by spare, catchy licks and solid rhythm, helped define Memphis soul music. Cropper's contributions extended beyond songwriting and playing; he was also a producer and was known for his collaborative spirit in a racially integrated band, which was rare for its time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, and received a Grammy Awards for lifetime achievement in 2007.
