The implementation of a barrier-free electronic toll collection system in India is expected to reduce congestion and improve efficiency on highways, positively impacting the transportation and logistics sectors. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that India will implement a new barrier-free electronic toll collection system nationwide within a year. This system, which has already been rolled out in 10 locations, aims to replace the current toll collection method, ensuring a seamless experience for highway users and reducing congestion. The India — National Payments Corporation of India developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program, with FASTag, an RFID-based device, at its core. The new system will integrate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with AI analytics and RFID-based electronic toll collection (FASTag) to facilitate barrier-less tolling. This initiative is part of ongoing highway projects worth Rs 10 lakh crore across India.
